ModCloth Finds

I've never shopped at ModCloth before, but they seem to have a great selection of
new, but vintage style clothing at moderate prices. Here are some of my favorites:

My love of coats, especially gray coats may be unbounded. This capelet coat nicely
reflects my subconscious desire to one day be a modern day Sherlock Holmes (my good
friend A and I have long been plotting to open a book store/become little old ladies who
solve murder mysteries a la Miss Marple). And, this Newbury Street Jacket is just too
princessy to resist.

Both of these pieces embody the we're too cool because we have removed part of the
garment movement. Actually I really really love the style of this blue smoke dress
and at $65 it seems like quite a steal. These Von Iva boots with a strappy back are
also pretty fun.

The one shoulder trend has been here for awhile now and I've been slowly warming
to it (although really, what sort of bra do you wear with that?). I recently saw Carol
Hannah from Project Runway sporting this one shouldered top that looks quite nice
as it flows back and forth over your arm, revealing and removing dependent on your
motion.

Bargain Find!

I wandered into the Goodwill in Berkeley the other day and found this fun coat for ....

wait for it....

wait for it...

$9.99! Score! It's a teeny bit large on me and I'm not completely sure how I feel about fur. I mean on the one hand I eat meat and wear leather and the coat is vintage from a charity shop so it's not like they killed the animal just for me, but on the other hand I dunno, fur? But, for $9.99 I decided to risk it. I can always sell it on eBay if I never end up wearing it. I think it's probably wool, with maybe a little cashmere and the collar looks like fox (?).

Oh and p.s. the Goodwill store is having an apparel sale tomorrow (Saturday). All apparel is 50% off.

The coat doesn't have a designer tag, but it does have this fun ILGWU label (International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union). This informational eBay Guide seems to place it somewhere between 1963-1974.

White Elephant Loot

I got a bunch of fun stuff at the White elephant sale on Saturday
(basically the best rummage sale ever!). The sale was humongous!
There were people bumping into you and goods everywhere you
turned. It was actually quite hard to get into some of the more
popular areas like jewelry, but we prevailed. :)

These Salvatore Ferragamo wingtip flats were just too cute to resist.
They look practically brand new!

I love these vintage patent leather bags. It actually looks much better
in person and is made by Lewis.

I got this pretty Schiaparelli scarf from the nice lady manning the scarf
and handbag section. She had the most amazing vintage pink Vera Wang
scarf stamped all over with white elephants, perfect for the White
elephant sale.

I also got some long white cloth gloves.

From the jewelry section I picked up a few things, a hair clip (on
left with green accent), a Hobe necklace (top), some art-decoish
earings (right), and two of the cutest little vintage bow pins (bottom).
My plan is to stick these two pins onto a hair band for wearing.

Bathing Costumes

I have always been a little obsessed with old fashioned bathing suits, where they always leave a little bit to the imagination (seen here on Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe, and Esther Williams). In practice though I'm not always sure the low cut legs are all that flattering...

More recently we have been seeing a lot of these retro suits in movies and on TV. These iconic photos of Kiera Knightley in Atonement have been haunting me for awhile now though I haven't quite made it to see the actual film yet... Her 1930s swimming costume and the play on light and dark in these photos is simply amazing.

On a side note, apparently you can pre-order this celebrity inspired dress from edressme.com.

I also noticed this retro look on Blake Lively in a recent episode of Gossip Girl. I think I read somewhere that she is actually wearing a modern swimming suit with a pair of shorts on top.

To snag your own old fashioned bathing costume you could try this bathing suit from
Anthropologie (left), or one of these cute options from Popina Swimwear (Retro Halter,
and Retro Sadie).

Another suit from mybabyjo.com (Classic sheath in black or red).

Urban Collection

Susie over at StyleBubble wrote a post today about a website
called UrbanCollection and about the way bloggers pick up on
a site and run with it, passing around the buzz like a shopping
chain letter. Well I'm adding myself to the chain. I hope Susie
doesn't mind. :) Here are my picks from their amazing array of
chic vintage clothing.

I am absolutely batty over this tuxedo party dress!!! Not sure I could fit
into a xs to small dress, though the measurements don't actually seem
that far off. This biker jacket is right on trend for this season.

This mod sailor dress is cute and sophistacted and this bow jacket is
flirty and fun.

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies on ABC is a show about a man named Ned who can make dead things
come to life with one touch of his finger. Their world is a wacky reality where dead
men walk, everyone's a character and pie is king. Chuck, a once dead, now living girl
helps Ned solve murders and more importantly looks fabulous while doing so.

Chuck's fashion is a blend of ladylike 50s vintage outfits with dark glasses, hats and
scarves for staying incognito.

She mostly wears dresses with cinched waists and a-line skirts in bright colors.
A big flower in her loosely curled hair is one of Chuck's signature looks.

This square necked green dress and bucket hat are so cute! I would love to dress like
this although it takes a certain something to pull off such costume-like looks.

My favorite outfit of the show so far, sort of an Audrey Hepburn goes pink look. The
hat is lovely with dark glasses and red lipstick. The deep V-neck of the dress
perfectly balances out the fullness of the skirt.

Plunging necklines and bold flowered prints.

Shades of orange match the show's other worldly sets.

Pink toned dresses with matching hued cardigans are another of Chuck's wardrobe
staples.
